The Biggest Story {A Flyby Promotions Review}

I’m always on the search for beautiful pictures books.  Picture books about the Bible are appreciated above all books, and as the mother of four children ten and under, I find that books explaining the important elements of the Bible are the books that are most interesting for my home collection of all.  So, when I received an opportunity to review The Biggest Story: How the Snake Crusher Brings Us Back to the Garden, I was excited because it looked like an opportunity to spend some time with a book that met all three of those criteria.

The Biggest Story

The Biggest Story was written by Kevin DeYoung and illustrated by Don Clark with the intention of presenting the Bible to children as one story.  Children, and often adults too, get confused because they see the Bible as a collection of nice stories about Abraham, Moses, Daniel, and Jesus (along with other characters), but don’t realize that there’s an underlying story that is the theme throughout scripture that all the other “stories” told throughout the Bible are actually telling.

So, taking ten chapters, with beautiful illustrations, DeYoung takes an opportunity to present the Bible as one story in a way that is accessible to both children and adults.  It’s a story of a fall from the garden and a restoration in the end.  It’s the story of the failure of the first Adam and the success of the second Adam.  Above all, it’s the story of the why and the how that we are restored to the Father’s house.

As I read the story myself and read it with my children, we found it eye catching and appealing.  The story is theologically accurate and drew us in from beginning to end.  It’s a delight to both the eyes and ears.  This is a book that is a pure pleasure to read and listen to, and it’s one that will stay on our bookshelves for a long time.  It’s also a book that I plan on using with some of the elementary groups of children that I teach.
